ENGLISH:
Like a dense fog descending on Price Lake in the early mornings of North Carolina, RIOT SON‘s sound emerges not from the folkloric tradition of his region, but from an almost spiritual need to purge loneliness. In My Love Is A Promise That I Can’t Keep, his debut EP with only three tracks and eleven minutes, the artist from Boone creates a particular universe christened Appalachian Gloom. It is an aesthetic manifesto generated in the isolation of a room, but which finds global resonance by crossing geographical borders through digital connections.
Genealogically, the work functions as a meeting point between the lyrical and vocal despair of the 2000s, inherited from figures like Gerard Way, and the somber and ethereal atmosphere of Robert Smith and Cigarettes After Sex. However, there is a technical precision that elevates the project above nostalgic pastiche. In the final track, “Slowly Without You,” recorded with a pyramidal arrangement that strains a 1974 Shere O Dyne microphone and an AKG C214 condenser, the sound travels along the edges of the stereo field until it collides in a dramatic climax. The resulting wall of echo evokes a feeling of claustrophobic confinement and, at the same time, immensity.
The EP’s greatest strength lies in the surgical balance between this methodological rigor and the rawness of the performance. The international production by Manget$u and the mixing by VE Beats shield the lo-fi textures with a contemporary polish, without robbing the integrity of the delivery. When the instrumental chaos silences to give way to a fragile bassline and the final whisper that gives the album its title, what we witness is not just the end of a relationship, but a humanized healing. RIOT SON transforms the pain of being an outcast in a small town into a sonic passport ready to conquer the world.
