Dortmund e a tradição eletrônica do oeste alemão sempre abrigaram artistas que operam à margem dos holofotes, movidos por uma devoção quase artesanal aos sintetizadores analógicos. É dessa geografia sombria e persistente que surge o Heldautomat, projeto idealizado por dois veteranos ativos desde os anos 1980: Christian Purwien, ex-vocalista do Second Decay, e Thomas Kowa, escritor de suspense e manipulador das máquinas.
Conhecidos pelo trabalho em conjunto como Purwien & Kowa e pela apresentação do podcast Disko80, a dupla abandona qualquer concessão ao apelo comercial das redes no single “Anders sein”. Lançada originalmente em 1994 no álbum ‘Taste’, do Second Decay, a composição ganha agora uma leitura expansiva e despida de nostalgia fácil.
O motor da faixa é a recusa ao engano e às promessas vazias. Em uma arquitetura sonora construída por caixas de ritmo lentas, piano pontual e timbres soturnos, Purwien canta a exaustão diante das desculpas sociais e da busca por profundidade em relações baseadas em aparências. A faixa não busca adequação às rádios; estende-se sem pressa, culminando em uma versão estendida de 12 polegadas que recupera o fôlego e o espaço de escuta típicos do pós-punk e da synth-pop do século passado.
Ao retrabalhar a própria obra três décadas depois, o duo demonstra que certas inquietações humanas não envelhecem. “Anders sein” existe hoje como uma afirmação madura de autonomia artística: em um ecossistema musical dominado pela efemeridade, escolher o caminho mais lento e denso é a forma mais honesta de permanecer diferente.

Dortmund and the electronic music tradition of western Germany have long been home to artists operating away from the limelight, driven by an almost artisanal devotion to analog synthesizers. It is from this shadowy, enduring landscape that Heldautomat emerges, a project conceived by two veterans active since the 1980s: Christian Purwien, former lead singer of Second Decay, and Thomas Kowa, a thriller writer and synth operator.
Known for their collaborative work as Purwien & Kowa and for hosting the Disko80 podcast, the duo eschews any concession to the commercial demands of social media with their single “Anders sein.” Originally released in 1994 on Second Decay’s album ‘Taste’, the composition is now reimagined in an expansive rendition, stripped of cheap nostalgia.
The track is driven by a rejection of deception and empty promises. Amidst a soundscape built on slow drum machine beats, sparse piano accents, and somber tones, Purwien sings of the exhaustion caused by social platitudes and the struggle to find depth in relationships based on appearances. The track makes no bid for radio airplay; it unfolds unhurriedly, culminating in a 12-inch extended version that recaptures the breathing room and listening experience characteristic of the post-punk and synth-pop eras of the last century.
By reworking their own material three decades later, the duo demonstrates that certain human anxieties never age. “Anders sein” stands today as a mature assertion of artistic autonomy: in a musical ecosystem dominated by the ephemeral, choosing a slower, denser path is the most honest way to remain different.
