BRENDAN RANNEY RETORNA COM O INCISIVO “SLIGHTLY OUT OF FOCUS”

…

ENGLISH:

In the cultural geography of Southern California, Claremont often figures as a tree-lined university enclave, sheltered from the chaotic pace of Los Angeles. It was against this backdrop of apparent tranquility that Brendan Ranney chose to disappear nearly two decades ago. After navigating the local scenes of Fort Wayne in the 1990s with the band Lurid, and the California indie circuit in the early 2000s, the musician simply walked away from the stage and his instruments. The daily grind of survival swallowed up his creative output, a path familiar to so many songwriters living on the industry’s fringes.

This 19-year hiatus finally ended in 2022, when rediscovering a box of his late father’s poetry reignited his need to write. Born from this confrontation with grief, oblivion, and family lineage, which includes historical ties to the golden age of New York television through his cousin Clay Cole, is the album Slightly Out of Focus.

Spanning ten tracks and 36 minutes, this solo debut eschews nostalgia. Its soundscape relies on electric guitars that oscillate between melodic clarity and bursts of deliberate noise, creating vocal layers that superimpose the weight of middle age onto the urgency of late-20th-century indie rock. Influences such as Pedro the Lion and the gritty sound of the 90s underground appear not as literal quotations, but as the natural musical language of someone who learned to compose in that era.

“Slightly Out of Focus” reveals that time away from art does not extinguish the urge to say something; it merely lets dust settle on the lens until the outlines of things must be forcibly rediscovered.
