E se uma cidade pudesse ser reouvida como uma canção antiga? Santi Forget, artista ítalo-peruana de Toronto, faz esse exercício delicado em “North Star”, lançamento que chega em 1º de maio. Depois de um período de distanciamento afetivo da própria cidade, mudar-se para o West End funcionou como um giro de agulha no vinil: a nostalgia voltou a girar em alta fidelidade.
A faixa ecoa o neo soul dos anos 90 sem cair em caricatura. O trio de igreja que a acompanha — Jonathan Maynard nos teclados, Joshua Allen na bateria, Andre Thomas no baixo, além do guitarrista Layton Thomas — confere uma leveza litúrgica, quase devocional, ao afeto urbano. A produção de John Dinsmore, no estúdio Lincoln County, mantém o equilíbrio entre a emoção crua e a clareza técnica. Não há excessos: cada dedilhado, cada arpejo de piano, respira.
Santi não apenas canta Toronto. Ela a nomeia. Brechós, galerias, restaurantes, ciclovias, estações do ano. E ainda acena a Drake, The Weeknd e Jessie Reyez sem forçar a barra. É um patriotismo miúdo, caseiro, que cabe numa tarde de carro com vidro aberto.
O que comove em “North Star” não é apenas a execução impecável ou a voz sultry que Santi já havia mostrado no EP “Raquel” (julho de 2025). É a escolha política e poética de olhar para o próprio território com paciência de recém-chegada. Humanizada, sim. Mas com a personalidade de quem já tocou no Drake Underground e no aeroporto YYZ — e agora quer devolver o afeto em canção.

What if a city could be heard again like an old song? Santi Forget, an Italian-Peruvian artist from Toronto, undertakes this delicate exercise in “North Star,” a release coming May 1st. After a period of emotional detachment from her own city, moving to the West End acted like a needle turning on a vinyl record: nostalgia began spinning again in high fidelity.
The track echoes the neo-soul of the 90s without falling into caricature. The accompanying church trio—Jonathan Maynard on keyboards, Joshua Allen on drums, Andre Thomas on bass, and guitarist Layton Thomas—lends a liturgical, almost devotional lightness to the urban affection. John Dinsmore’s production at Lincoln County Studios maintains a balance between raw emotion and technical clarity. There are no excesses: every fingerpicking note, every piano arpeggio, breathes.
Santi doesn’t just sing about Toronto. She names it. Thrift stores, galleries, restaurants, bike paths, seasons. And it even nods to Drake, The Weeknd, and Jessie Reyez without forcing it. It’s a small, homely patriotism, the kind you spend an afternoon in a car with the window down.
What’s moving about “North Star” isn’t just the impeccable execution or the sultry voice that Santi had already shown on the EP “Raquel” (July 2025). It’s the political and poetic choice to look at her own territory with the patience of a newcomer. Humanized, yes. But with the personality of someone who has already played at Drake Underground and YYZ airport—and now wants to return the affection in song.
